Tongobriga: An Archaeological Treasure in Marco de Canaveses

Tongobriga is an ancient Roman city located in the parish of Freixo, in the municipality of Marco de Canaveses, northern Portugal. This important archaeological site bears witness to the Roman presence in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula and was inhabited between the 1st and 4th centuries AD. Its strategic location near the Tâmega River facilitated control over trade routes and communication with other regions of the empire.

Excavations carried out since the 20th century have revealed a well-organized city, featuring a forum, baths, houses with mosaics, a sewage system, and a religious complex. These remains clearly demonstrate the process of Romanization of the local populations, who gradually adopted Roman customs and practices.

Today, Tongobriga is a protected national monument and a visitable archaeological field. The Interpretation Centre offers an educational experience, allowing visitors to better understand daily life during Roman times.

Tongobriga is not only a site of historical interest but also an example of the cultural heritage value in Portugal. Its preservation and promotion help reinforce collective memory and identity, connecting past and present.
